The main GHG and the human activities that are responsible for them

Economic activities and GHG emissions

The anthropogenic greenhouse effect, as opposed to the natural greenhouse effect, is due to the massive release of anthropogenic GHGs, i.e., those linked to human activities. According to the Kyoto Protocol, six gases are associated with the anthropogenic portion of GHGs, three of which are responsible for 98% of the effects:

  • CO2 or carbon dioxide (79%)
  • CH4 or methane (14%)
  • N2O or nitrous oxide (5%)
