About the decarbonisation guide
Prepared by the Economic Chamber of North Macedonia with support from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union (EU), this guide is part of an initiative funded through an EIB grant aimed at supporting the Economic Resilience Initiative (ERI) with the objective to promote sustainable economic growth, enhance social inclusion, and bolster the economic resilience of North Macedonia.
This guide is primarily designed for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and focuses on improving their knowledge about the necessary capital for investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. By providing SMEs with tailored advice and resources, we aim to help them reduce their carbon footprints and move towards carbon neutrality.
The decarbonisation guide is a comprehensive digital resource that offers clear steps and concrete solutions for companies of all sizes across various sectors to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It highlights best practices, details subsidy and funding opportunities, and provides insights into training and technical assistance available for effective carbon accounting and other environmental sustainability efforts.
The menu enables users to navigate between different sites. Additionally, call-to-action links at the bottom of the pages provide further guidance. The decarbonisation guide also includes a glossary and an FAQ section, both accessible at the bottom of the pages.
EIB Global
As a branch of the EIB that operates beyond the EU, EIB Global supports climate action, economic growth, and development. In line with the political ambitions of the European Green Deal, the EIB has decided to raise the level of climate and environmental commitment across the EIB Group, positioning itself as “the European climate bank”. This commitment is based on four main pillars:
- Accelerating the green transition by increasing green financing, and supporting innovation and the emergence of new economic models
- Ensuring a fair transition for all
- Supporting operations compliant with the Paris Agreement
- Strengthening strategic coherence and accountability
Since its founding in 1991, the EIB has been instrumental in North Macedonia, providing financing for pivotal infrastructure projects and support for local authorities and small businesses. The bank has disbursed EUR 1.6 billion in funding towards transport, energy, utility infrastructure projects, and small businesses. Furthermore, EIB leverages its technical and financial knowledge to assist local partners, providing customised advice and technical assistance. Through its long-standing partnership with the Development Bank of North Macedonia and local commercial banks, EIB provided EUR 650m of working capital and investment finance for the sustainable growth of Macedonian companies to date. These EU investments supported 2,500 firms across the country, sustaining around 140,000 Macedonian jobs and creating over 10,000 new ones.
Through framework loans and technical assistance, the EIB has notably concentrated on backing the construction and renovation of water supply, wastewater, and flood protection infrastructure throughout North Macedonia. These investments are crucial in the battle against climate change and have a significant positive impact on the local population by enhancing access to drinking water and sanitation nationwide, advancing climate change adaptation through the reduced use of natural resources and energy, decreasing GHG emissions with improved wastewater treatment and sludge digestion, safeguarding public health by preventing diarrheal diseases, and addressing pollution through the cessation of untreated sewage discharges into water bodies.
