Impacts of GHG emissions
North Macedonia is severely affected by climate change.
The country faces significant challenges from climate change, with notable impacts including river floods, urban flooding, landslides, and wildfires. The sectors most affected — agriculture, water resources, energy, ecosystems, and education — suffer considerable adverse effects, which in turn, severely impact economic activity. This is especially true for the rural poor, exacerbating economic inequality across the country.

In the next decade, there is a compelling expectation of potentially destructive and life-threatening floods in both riverine and urban areas. The region's rainfall patterns, terrain slope, geology, soil, land cover, and the potential for earthquakes contribute to a heightened risk of localised landslides. Annually, there is a greater than 50% chance of weather conditions that could result in significant wildfire, risking both property and lives. While extreme heat has been considered a moderate risk until now, the likelihood of experiencing at least one prolonged extreme heat event exceeds 25% within the next five years. The anticipated increase in temperatures and alterations in rainfall patterns due to climate change are expected to further escalate the risk of these natural hazards.
