How to interpret the carbon footprint analysis

The results of a product's carbon footprint analysis are presented in tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), a measure of the amount of GHG emitted in the production, distribution, and use of the product. This analysis allows for: a comparison of the product's environmental performance with the industry average, the identification of emissions sources, an understanding of the factors contributing to emissions, and the determination of improvement opportunities.

Generally, there are several ways to improve a product's carbon footprint, including:

  • Using renewable energy sources
  • Improving the energy efficiency of production equipment
  • Optimising production processes
  • Using recyclable materials
  • Optimising transportation (routes, less polluting means of transport, reducing distance)
  • Encouraging sustainable use of products
  • Promoting recycling and reuse of products
  • Evaluating and reducing emissions throughout the supply chain
